Are you feeling frustrated with Facebook?
If so, you’re not alone!

We have some tips below to help you and your business gain a little control back from Facebook and use it effectively for your business. In 2025, it still is the largest social media platform and if your business is consumer focused you really should still be on there and promoting your business. Yes we get it, it can feel like no one is seeing your content and all you see is irrelevant content we know, but take a look at some of the tips which might help to readdress the balance and you can get more out of this platform (a lot of these tips are applicable to other platforms too!, fyi!)

So let’s take a look how can you can train Facebook’s algorithm to show you more of what you LOVE and less (or none!) of what is completely irrelevant!

TIP 1: Curate your content with post settings

  • Click the three dots (···) on any post.
  • Choose from options like:
    • Show more/show less – to fine-tune your preferences (try this one regularly!)
    • Hide post – to see less of this type of content
    • Snooze for 30 days – temporary relief from a person/page
    • Hide all – never see posts in your feed from this person/page again
    • Unfollow – for personal profiles, stay friends but never see their posts in your feed; stop seeing posts if it’s a Page

EXTRA TIP: Be consistent with these actions to refine your feed quickly.

TIP 2: Engage with what matters most to your business

  • Be sure to prioritise engagement on content you LOVE and that you want to see more of by Adding reactions and comments regularly or sharing this content to your news feed ( your audience) to reinforce the importance of this person/page to the algorithm.
  • You can also try using the ‘Favourites’ feature to add up to 30 people and/or pages that matter most to your business. Their posts will supposedly be shown higher in your feed, although it can still take some training of the algorithms. Note: the Favourites feature is also available on Instagram and may be useful to set up as well.

TIP 3: Engage in the DMs more

  • Try periodically interacting with more of your Favourite people/pages and Friends in the DMs. 💬
  • This informs the platform that you want to see more of those sources of content.

EXTRA TIP: Don’t go too crazy in the DMs! And be super careful of cold outreach with pitches.

TIP 4: Master the “Feeds” tab

  • Use the Feeds tab (available on both mobile and desktop) to view posts in chronological order:
  • All (default) – Mix of content from a few friends, groups, and pages plus a lot of content from ‘unconnected’ sources that is suggested for you by Meta’s AI-powered discovery engine.
  • Favourites – Content from your selected top accounts.
  • Friends – Posts from personal connections only.
  • Groups – Posts from Facebook Groups you’ve joined or that you manage.
  • Pages – Updates from businesses/public Pages you follow.

EXTRA TIP: Visit these feeds regularly and engage with posts to help Facebook learn your preferences.

TIP 5: Respond to Facebook questions

  • When Facebook asks, “Do you want to see more or less of this?”—always answer!
  • This directly informs the algorithm of your content preferences.

EXTRA TIP: Facebook learns from your feedback and should continue to adjust your feed accordingly.

Tip 6: Fine-tune your ad preferences

  • Click the three dots (···) on any ad and choose:
  • Hide ad if it’s irrelevant.
  • Why am I seeing this ad? to adjust preferences. Your choices are:
  • Hide all ads from this advertiser
  • Update your ad preferences – just be aware this is a huge rabbit hole! You might be stunned at all the interests Meta has logged that you’re (supposedly!) interested in. At some point, you might want to investigate and adjust this list.
  • Report ad if it’s inappropriate.

EXTRA TIP: Ads are inevitable, but you can minimise unwanted ones by regularly adjusting your settings.

Tip 7: Regularly review pages your business follow

  • Visit your liked / followed pages and remove those that no longer interest you.
  • This may or may not make a huge difference to your feed/experience. But, again, it can help train the algorithm and is a good exercise to do once in a blue moon, similar to reviewing your friend list.
  • On your Home page > navigate to Pages on the left menu > then Liked Pages. You can also sort by recently liked or earliest liked, if that helps.
  • Plus, you might want to Like / Follow new pages aligned with your current interests and business goals. Perhaps adding some to your Favourites list (see Tip #2 .

EXTRA TIP: You may find this exercise easier to do on mobile vs. desktop or vice versa! But the ability to sort by the earliest followed is only on desktop from what I can see.

Tip 8: Manage default content preferences

  • Go to Settings & Privacy > Settings > Content Preferences > Manage Defaults and adjust the four options to your liking:
  • Political content
  • Low-quality content (like clickbait or spam)
  • Unoriginal content and problematic sharing
  • Sensitive content
  • For most of these four categories, your choices are:
  • Show more – “You might see more of this content”
  • Default – “You’re less likely to see this content”
  • Show less – “You may not see this content at all”

Tip 9: Review your following list (for auto-follows)

  • Meta claims they never force users to auto-follow accounts. But I’ve seen with my own eyes this happening!
  • So, just keep an eye on your Following list from time to time… to me, a follow is essentially a form of endorsement.
  • So, periodically check the list of who you follow and look for any ‘auto-follows.’
  • The list on Facebook should show in ‘most recent’ order.
  • You want to check for any pages/profiles you do not recognise that you followed. This was very relevant when Trump was reinstalled into the White House, auto follows of the POTUS and FlOTUS accounts was rife! (Go and check yours!)

EXTRA TIP:  You may want to do the same process on Instagram, too.

How the Facebook and Instagram feed works

Since the growth of TikTok, Meta has copied their powerful discovery feed which has had interesting impacts on your feeds.

As much as 50% of the content you see in your feeds today is from ‘unconnected’ sources. (That is, people and pages that you have not actively followed.)

Our feeds are curated with INTEREST-based content and no longer just friend/follow-based.That’s how ALL social media platforms are functioning today. We’ve moved away from the friend graph. And it’s now an AI-predictive interest graph.

We will never get ‘rid’ of the suggested content fully. Because that’s Meta’s agenda. And, apparently, the newest algorithms are driving more time on site: about 6-7% for both Facebook and Instagram.
